Egg shells in coffee?

Born in a predominantly coffee loving state in India, I gather coffee based recipes. Let me admit that I have never tried to make from my list of 70 odd coffee based recipes.

Along with new recipes, I gather respective images also. Look at this image below by which I was attracted to look the recipe called "Coffee with Honey and Whipped Cream".

Hmmm.. looks yummy-isn't it?

I was a little bit peeved that one of the ingredient in this coffee based recipe is egg shells. Why egg shells? No explanation is given in the recipe.

Here is the actual recipe:
  1. Tie ground coffee very loosely in small cheesecloth bag. Put into coffee pot with 6 cups cold water and several egg shells. Let stand 1 hour
  2. Boil for 5 minutes
  3. Add 1/2 cup cold water and let stand 3 minutes
  4. Serve coffee with honey and whipped cream
What exactly the role of egg shells? Anyone who gives an explanation will get a free featured link in my PR3 web directory.(smile)
