When she came back, she recounted her experiences and strange sights. We were all particularly amazed to hear about how furniture placed at various places inside the campus carrying note saying, "Please take me".
We could not believe that people will give away such costly furniture for free.
Well, when I saw this photo from Flickr, I believed what my mother-in-law told us 10 years ago.

I feel sad for this sofa. I would put up note on it saying, "Take me please; don't abandon me".

I'm in Toronto Canada and yes, all over Canada and I'm sure the US, when people have items that they no longer have use for, but that might still be useable, we will sometimes put them outside our homes in the hope that someone who can use it will come along and take it.
Some people call it curbside shopping.
Our neighbors just moved yesterday and last night we noticed that they'd put an old TV set at the curb ... in front of our house! We moved it so it was more in front of there former home. The TV was probably 20 years old or older, but likely still worked. Looking outside right now at 6:50 am I see that it's still there, but I'll be that someone comes along and takes it before noon.
We've put out old humidifiers, a dresser, an old table and a few other things over the years. All items that still looked ok and that were still of some us - but we'd replaced them with newer items and each time someone came along and took them within an hour of us putting them outside.
I think most of the time these items are picked up by college students or those that are just starting out on their own and can't afford furniture. However there are times when businesses that sell used items come along and pick the items up too.
Some people cruise along in cars or trucks looking for such items.
It's kind of funny I guess.
I do like the fact that if there's something that I don't want anymore I can easily "give it away".
