We are all used to look at the eyes of the person we are talking to-right? It is generally looked upon as indecent to look elsewhere while we are speaking to anyone.
But, in Japan, it was the other way. It was considered rude to look at the eyes of the superior while talking to him/her.
Yes, it was and not these days. That was the practice in vogue during the 1800s. It is a bit odd custom really and there is no record of any punishment for that. At least it was not so to my knowledge.
Let me try to recall where I read this bit of information. Ah yes, it was in the Yahoo news a week or so before.
