We all have national prides such as monuments, people, products, literature, service etc. We take pride believing that they are truly national; I mean if you are proud of Coke, then you believe that it is a product of America.
These prides are mostly passed on to us by previous generations. But do you know that some of the products that we are proud of may not actually belong to us.
For example, Americans are proud of Firetone, the tire company. But Firestone was bought out in 1988 by Bridgestone, a Japanese rubber conglomerate based in Tokyo and founded in 1931. Bridgestone is currently ranked first in the global tire market, with Michelin second, Goodyear third and Continental fourth.
Isn't that news to you?
Similarly, there are 9 other items that Americans consider their icons that are not American. I will give you one more example. The Chrysler Building, New York's sky scrapper is now owned by Abu Dhabi Investment Council.
