Willingness to die as a martyr is of course a noble attitude. Though soldiers are trained to cultivate this mentality, there may be a semblance of fear. Hey, I am not degrading anyone. I owe my life to them protecting the nation.
There is a particular caste in India called Charan. They live in Rajastan and Gujarat. They are fierce patriots and everyone in the family have this unflinching attitude to sacrifice their life during war time.
During the reign of kings, it was considered essential to have a Charan in their court. Charan caste members are also called as 'Kaviraj' for their love for poetry.
They are also known for the self-immolation for various reasons. One woman named Punai Mata, committed self-immolation just to save a wild hare.
