Eagles and buffalos, pandas and lions.

If the eagles and buffalos are pride of America, then, the panda makes the Chinese proud. I am speaking of gold coins of the countries that have these animals and bird on them as insignia.

Once, I met the father of a Sri Lankan cricket player in a restaurant in Madras. His son’s name and my son’s name are same which drew him to our table. He easily inserted himself in our topic of conversation, which was on gold coins of different countries.

He told us a rare fact that the Sri Lanka has no modern gold coin to boast of. He told humorously that they have only old coins. Is it so? I could not immediately contradict him because it was news to me.

Today, I did a search in Google for images of modern Sri Lankan gold coins and I drew a blank.

I wonder what the U.S. Gold Bureau says on Sri Lankan gold coins.
